Many people have no idea what size storage unit they actually need—and that’s totally normal. The last thing we want is for you to overestimate and end up paying more than necessary. Below are some simple tips to help you choose the perfect unit size for your needs. Start With the Basics The size you need depends on how much you have and how large those items are. As a general guideline: 5×5: Great for closets, décor, and seasonal items 10×15: Ideal for 2–3 rooms worth of furniture When in doubt, size up—especially if you want easier access to your things Step 1: Take Inventory & Visualize Your Space Measure larger items Group smaller items together Make a simple list of everything you plan to store This helps you understand your total volume and avoid surprises on move-in day. Step 2: Match Your Items to Unit Size Guides Small Units (5×5 — 25 sq. ft.) Perfect for boxes, small décor, seasonal items, or outdoor gear. Medium Units (5×10 — 50 sq. ft.) Great for a one-bedroom apartment, small furniture, bikes, and stacked boxes. Large Units (10×10 — 100 sq. ft.) Ideal for a two-bedroom home, larger furniture, and appliances. Extra-Large Units (10×15 — 150 sq. ft.) Holds the contents of a 2–3-bedroom home or a large family’s belongings. Step 3: Think About Access & Stacking Most storage units are about 8 feet tall, which gives you plenty of room to stack. Place less-used items toward the back Keep frequently used items near the door Use the vertical space to maximize your square footage Final Tip: Don’t Undersize Your Unit People often underestimate how much space they need. Choosing a slightly larger unit can save you time, frustration, and multiple trips in the future. ...

When it comes to using a storage unit, not everything is fair game. While you can store most household or business items, there are a few categories you should always avoid: 1. Hazardous Materials Items that are flammable, toxic, or explosive should never be kept in a storage unit. These materials pose serious safety risks. 2. Living Things No storage unit can safely support plants, animals, or anything living. Lack of ventilation, sunlight, and proper care makes storage units unsafe for them. 3. Weapons Weapons of any kind should not be stored. They present unnecessary risks and are prohibited for the safety of everyone on the property. 4. Perishable Items Food and other perishables can rot, attract pests, and create odors that affect neighboring units. For everyone’s protection, these items are not allowed. 5. Illegal Items Stolen goods, illegal substances, or anything unlawful cannot be stored under any circumstances and can lead to serious consequences. If you’re ever unsure about what can or cannot be stored, this list is a great place to start. And if you still have questions, we’re always here to help at Latch-iT Self Storage. ...

Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate, connect, and enjoy the comfort of home. With a little extra storage space, you can make this season calmer, cozier, and more organized—just the way it should be. The Thanksgiving season is all about gathering, slowing down, and appreciating the people and moments that matter most. But let’s be honest—between hosting family, pulling out holiday décor, and preparing for the busiest shopping season of the year, this time of year can also get a little chaotic. That’s where Latch-iT Self Storage comes in. Whether you’re prepping for guests or gearing up for holiday traditions, having extra space can make your Thanksgiving week feel a whole lot smoother. 1. Make Room for Guests Without the Stress If you’re hosting Thanksgiving this year, you already know the drill—guest rooms turn into storage rooms, dining tables disappear under clutter, and suddenly there’s nowhere for friends and family to land. A storage unit provides a quick and convenient way to move extra furniture, boxes, or seasonal items out of the way, allowing you to welcome your guests comfortably. A little extra breathing room goes a long way! 2. Keep Seasonal Décor Organized and Ready From fall wreaths to Christmas trees waiting in the wings, holiday décor can quickly take over closets and garages. Storing your décor in a climate-controlled unit keeps everything organized, clean, and protected from the weather swings we see in Alabama and Mississippi. When it’s time to decorate, everything is right where you left it—no digging through dusty corners. 3. Clear the Kitchen Chaos Thanksgiving cooking requires space. Lots of it.If your kitchen or pantry is stuffed with appliances or items you only use a few times a year, moving those extras into storage can free up valuable counter and cabinet space. Think: - Air fryers - Extra plates and serving dishes - Small appliances - Bulk pantry items - A tidy kitchen makes holiday prep feel a little less hectic (and a lot more enjoyable). 4. Protect Big Purchases Ahead of Black Friday Planning on taking advantage of ...

Latch-iT offers climate-controlled and non-climate-controlled units for our customers to rent. There are many positives to both. Renting a non-climate or a climate unit really depends on what you intend to put in your unit. Below are all the benefits of climate and non-climate storage units. Climate-controlled units keep your storage unit within a certain temperature or humidity range. It allows you to know exactly what temperature your belongings will be out without the stress of the uncontrollable. Climate is best used for furniture, bedding, rugs, clothing, and electronics. Any items that you do not want to get weathered, humid, or damaged by outside factors. A good rule of thumb for climate-controlled units is to choose based off if the items you are storing came from the inside of your home or office. If they did, then choose climate-controlled. Non-climate-controlled units do not regulate temperature or humidity. These units are drive-up units, which are so convenient for quick and easy access. You simply enter through our gated facility, drive up to your unit, and unload or load all of your belongings. We recommend using non-climate for convenience, larger items, outdoor furniture, lawn equipment, cars, or holiday decor. Anything that is not susceptible to heat damage or humidity fluctuations. A good rule of thumb for non-climate-controlled units is to choose based on whether the items you are storing did not come from inside your home or office (i.e., garage, outdoor storage shed, etc.). If they came from outside areas around your home or office, then a non-climate-controlled unit would be the best option. Thankfully, at Latch-iT, we can help you with any questions you may have about whether your stuff should go in a non-climate or climate-controlled unit. We can always assist with any further questions on this topic. Many of our customers choose either of these options. It truly depends on what you prefer and what your items need. ...

As the cool weather settles into Mississippi and Alabama, many people assume their storage items are safe from the harsh effects of heat and humidity. But while the summer months often steal the spotlight, cooler weather can also bring its own challenges — like increased moisture, shifting temperatures, and unexpected cold snaps. That’s where climate-controlled storage makes all the difference. Here are five ways climate-controlled storage protects your belongings during the cooler months: 1. Prevents Moisture Damage Even during winter, Alabama and Mississippi’s humidity doesn’t disappear. When temperatures drop, condensation can form inside traditional storage units, leading to mold, mildew, or rust. Climate-controlled storage keeps both temperature and humidity levels steady, preventing that unwanted dampness from ever forming. 2. Protects Wooden Furniture and Antiques Wood can expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity, which may cause cracks or warping over time. By maintaining a consistent indoor environment, climate-controlled storage helps preserve furniture, antiques, and wooden instruments so they stay in great shape all year long. 3. Keeps Electronics Safe Cold air and fluctuating humidity can damage electronic components or cause condensation when temperatures rise again. Storing electronics — like TVs, gaming systems, and computers — in a climate-controlled storage unit in Hattiesburg or Opelika ensures they stay dry, stable, and ready to use whenever you need them. 4. Preserves Documents and Photos Paper items like books, photos, and important documents are sensitive to even small changes in the environment. Climate-controlled units maintain a balanced temperature, protecting your valuables from brittleness, fading, or curling caused by cool, damp air. 5. Adds Peace of Mind During Seasonal Storage Whether you’re storing patio furniture, seasonal décor, or summer clothes, knowing your belongings are kept in a secure, temperature-regulated space offers peace of mind. You won’t have to worry about surprise weather shifts damaging your items — they’ll be in the same condition when you retrieve them as when you packed them away. Choose Climate-Controlled Storage in Hattiesburg, MS, or Opelika, AL When the temperatures drop, your belongings deserve year-round protection. At Latch-iT Self ...

At Latch-iT Self Storage, we make it easy to stay organized and enjoy all the best parts of the season — without the clutter. Store Tailgating Gear Between Games Whether you’re cheering on the Golden Eagles or the Tigers, tailgating is practically a Southern tradition. A storage unit gives you a convenient, secure space to keep your tailgating setup ready to go. With 24/7 access and digital smart locks, you can swing by anytime to grab your supplies before game day, and tuck them away again once the final whistle blows. No more tripping over folding tables in the garage or digging through closets for your team flags! 2. Keep Luggage, Décor, and Sports Gear Organized Fall means more than football — it’s also travel season, holiday prep, and time for kids’ sports. From suitcases to soccer gear to boxes of pumpkins and wreaths, it’s easy for your home to feel cluttered this time of year. Climate-controlled storage helps keep your belongings safe from the Mississippi and Alabama heat and the cooler weather that is starting to creep in, while freeing up your closets and garage. Make Room for What Matters As the holidays approach, you might be hosting friends, family, or out-of-town guests.
